1978 CVX20 460 berkley
« on: December 23, 2023, 07:58:07 PM »
Just picked up CVX20
Very nice boat pretty original although the metal flake has been resprayed
It was very well done
Couple of questions to the group
First was there a pinstripe on this boat in 78
And if so does anyone have some pictures I can reference
Secondly Ford 460 for the life of me I can not find any drain plugs on the block
I am in Alberta Canada where it gets really dam cold
Guy I bought it from poured RV antifreeze thru hoses but I am not comfortable with that
I have it in heated storage but need to better winterized it
What?s my best approach on that
Tks in advance for any help

Don't think original came with pin strip ..  The silver CVX20's show a red pin strip in 1977 & 1979 but nothing on other colors.
Maybe the deluxes had them ?

Not sure about 460's but there's info here    ...  https://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=2916.0

And there are a few guys here with CVX20's that should be able to answer your question.

You can also try the " Glastron Carlson CVX 20" Facebook group ..  https://www.facebook.com/groups/917509491684655/

You can find brochures, Owners Manuals and P.I.G.s on Glastron's site ..  https://www.glastron.com/us/owners

I just picked up a jetboat project (79 checkmate jetmate) powered with a 460. on mine there are 2 drain caps on the block under the exhaust manifolds a bit more toward the rear on both sides that are a PITA to get to. due to the state of the project I am in, I did not drain my block as it is in a heated building as I am working on it this winter here in MI.

I hope this helps you find what you are looking for.

Now what I wonder is if I can replace these pipe caps blocking off the drains with 2 small ball valves to ease this process come fall and spring?

Here is a link to an old thread from another site on winterizing a Packajet. In the replies there are photos of the location of the block drains. You probably also have drain plugs for the exhaust manifolds. I don't have any experience with the Berkeleys, but I have winterized inboard engines for cold climates.

The safest approach in my mind is to drain the water and then refill with RV Antifreeze. The downside to petcocks or ball valves is that they are a smaller outlet and can be prone to clogging with sand, rust, or other debris. Be prepared to poke the drain openings to make sure the water flows out of the drains.

Here's a pic of a 460 drain plug. 1 on each side of the block by the core plug. I believe this is a 1979 block and the plug is 1/4in. NPT with an Allen head. . Oil pan is at bottom of picture. Hope this helps.
