Seems like someone would have suggested that very thing.......
Yep.  And that person was onto something! ;)

I hope the boom is long enough to reach the engine as it sits in the pickup bed.

Most booms are adjustable.  Rated weight goes down as boom is adjusted out.  Has a tendency to tip forward when extended all the way out at 500lb setting, usually the front wheels can extend also to compensate.  I use mine quite a bit, works good hanging OB's

I started assembling the crane on Sunday.  I had to stop when the metric  bolts were bigger than the metric sockets I had.  &#^@%@&*@

You just need a metric crescent wrench.

The engine from Ben's V-179 doesn't have any hoist rings on it.
Any idea what bolt thread I would need to screw into the hoist ring location near the front (water pump end) of the engine?
If I have to go to the local hardware store for a bolt, I'd like to have a clue what thread size to get.

Maybe I could unbolt the hoist ring from the current engine and transfer it to the V-179 engine?

Pull the lift eye from your other engine for the front. Then around the exhaust elbow for the rear.

I got the shop crane assembled and easily lifted the engine out of the pickup truck.
It's now on a movers dolly so I can move it around easily.

Nice. Looks more robust then mine. My ram//cylinder did leak when I got it and they gave me a 3 ton ram...which leaks too. Really sucks when you're trying to install an engine and it keeps lowering itself.  >:(
