equipment needed to lift and move an engine?
« on: October 28, 2016, 08:13:49 AM »
What would you all say is the needed equipment to:
1.  lift an engine out of a boat
2.  move an engine into a pickup truck bed
3.  move an engine out of a pickup truck bed again

I'm trying to understand the logistics of removing and moving an engine.

1.  a chain winch or chain hoist?
2.  a garage tall enough (how tall?) to suspend the engine above the boat so you can get the boat out of the garage?
3.  some kind of portable hoist to allow engine lifting and loading?

assuming yer talking about a boat that's in woodbury...
pick the boat up, bring it to my house in north st paul, pull the motor out with the skidster and put it in yer truck,
i prob have a pallet for it as well.
a come-along in a garage will get it out, just need to be aware of what you are lifting on.
a modern garage with engineered trusses is prob strong enough, old school rafters may not be.
or borrow an engine hoist

My CVZ and Timi utilize the standard engine lift found just about everywhere, the harbor freight one is as good as any.  Some guys like the fold up ones, they take up less space in the garage.  Your craft would be similar height, the trick is to not use much chain above the engine as you have to lift pretty high to clear transom.   On the larger boats, like Tims 23, I borrowed my brother tree crane, you have to lift it a long way.  Others have used A frames with chain hoists, Tree's, and garage rafters.  I'm not found of the garage rafters ide unless it is rated for such work, but some folks have modified their garage supports to conduct such an operation.  Personally for your engine/craft I'd recommend the engine lift, possible you may know someone you could borrow it from?

I use both a floor style cherry picker engine hoist and a truss hanging electric hoist. The truss one has a large steel I beam spanning 5 trusses to distribute the load.

You could also make a simple a-frame out of 2x6's with a chain hoist you can back a truck/boat under.

When I put my CVZ's engine in, I rented an engine hoist.  $40 for the weekend.  I had a cheap CL engine stand for the engine, and just plucked it off and into the boat.

The one I rented was 'portable', so it was easily broken down for transport.

I'm planning to go down to Rochester this afternoon and pick up Ben's SSV-179.

Then, I'll come back to Minneapolis Friday night or Saturday morning, and try and figure out how to deal with it.
Ultimately, I'll store the engine up at the lake garage near Paynesville.

I'm going to spend most of today driving across the state, to get the pickup and then to go get the boat.

I just saw these:

I suppose that would work, but might be a bit difficult to use in a garage in the winter.  Maybe you have other stuff you need it for?

I'd take Joe up on his offer. If that's not possible I've used come alongs or a 1500 lb. winch. All said and done the rental Cherry Picker is the way to go as you can take it with you to unload at camp.  As far as engine stand you can build one if you have a couple extra 2x4's. I built my stand with scrap pieces. With mine you don't have to remove the flywheel cover to put the engine on the stand. The casters were from a broken 4 wheel dolly. Dollar Investment....zero.

I just got back to Minneapolis with Ben's boat.  I gave him $1 so he could say he sold the boat. :)
I would like to take theduceman (joe?) on the offer.  When is a good time?  I'm open all day Saturday, until about 6pm when I need to get ready for an evening party.

I drove for 7 hours today...tired and hungry!

I suspect I'll pay someone else to install any engine in my SSV-177.
With that, my main concern is moving the engine from the floor into the pickup bed and from the pickup bed back down to the floor again.

The Ford Ranger is a 4x4 and thus the bed is pretty high.
I wonder if one of the floor engine hoists will be tall enough to lift the engine over the tailgate?

That hoist should do the trick. I have a similar one and was able to lift my 350's into the back of my full size chev 4x4 on the roller cart shown. The casters just cleared the gate.

When I offloaded the 3.7L from the Baja, I just used ramps from the bed to the floor.  Jim B. had kindly put the engine on a cheap ($13) moving dolly from Harbor Freight.   I just rolled it down the ramps and onto the floor.  (My son helped to control it.)

Easy.  (I did have blocks of wood to support the ramps in the middle.)
