LOL ... forgot to mention that,  it water,  it's not ready yet, she's just shooting water, thats good practice, if she can spray an even coat of water with-out getting "run's" then she can spray an even coat of paint.

we are going to paint the hull, gelcoat the top, add some flake

Red how well can you get gel to lay down. I hate buffing and dont want to buff for hours to get a smooth finish. Can you get it to lay down like clear coat so there is only minor buffing?

I have thinned the clear gelcoat up to 20% with the styrene and it still leaves orange peel,  I sanded and polished for seven days to get my new scimitar to look as good as it does, but I'm thinking about using a dump gun this one and brush tip it.  The spec's say to only thin the gelcoat 10%, but I didn't figure it would hurt much to thin it 20% on the gold boat, but it did not produce the dazzel as the one I have now, and a lot of the mix blowed out the door.

I went to the paint store the other day to get the paint for the hull on this one, and I checked out the clear urethane Omni has now, pretty tempting to use it next time, technolegy has changes a lot in the last three years, they have some that cost almost $300 a gallon, and even a mix to suspend big flake under it, and a "lifetime" warranty, next step down cost $145 a gallon, suposed to last 8 / 10 years in any climate, that would sure save a Lot of work.

This is the biggest reason that I don't want to use Gel. I hate buffing!!!  I wish there was a way to get it to lay down smooth. Have you tried spraying then sanding smooth with 600 or 800 grit and spraying one finish coat on to get the Gloss back? That is what I usually do on any custom painting and I had to do on the 18 to get the smooth finish. It gets out any orange peel, imperfections, and tape lines that you may have had.
I think this has become an addiction.

There's a local guy, a "celebrity" in his own mind, who loves to talk about the work done on his car ...
He drives a Maserati with a "true flame" or "real flame" paint job.  He talks about the clear coat going on as a thick layer of syrup.  He stopped me at the gas station one day, with the boat hooked up to the back of the car, and he said he thought my boat looked like it needed flames and a deep, thick coat of clear ...

The third video should show the flames & clear going down.

That really IS kool Jerry !

Maybe we should send Barb to his shop a while,  she's picking up on the paint gun pretty good, she sprayed the primer on this one for me today, she can see better than me, I just started sanding, it's layed on smooth and even, makes my job a Lot easier.

That looks much better Barb. Try to take longer strokes so there is less starting and stopping, You should have between 1/3 and 1/2 overlap of coats (8" spray pattern = 3" to 4" of overlap) keep the gun pointed at a 90 degree angle to your work. Do all strokes in the same direction, and alternate  between coats, not like with the water one way then the other or you will have heavy spots and light spots. I like that speed. When I learned to paint I was told ya need a bottle of Boons Farm, and a Joint. The Boons farm to mellow you out so you had the rhythm of a dancer, and the joint so when ya screwed up you didn't care. (don't try to fix boo-boos as they happen go back later, You will just make a bigger problem) Primer is a great way to learn. You can't make a mistake that can't be fixed with some sandpaper.  Can't wait for the color coat.

Thanks for the tips Jerry.  Red cant see and I have one metal and plastic shoulder and not too far away from making it a pair.  I understand the longer stroke and over lap technique, and I was ready for a glass of alcohol by the time I was finished, but I think the fumes did the job. LOL

it took about 3 hours for the primer to set up to sand, and 4 hours to sand it slick, 400 3M and I'll finish it off in the morning with some 600, we are suposed to have light winds and temps in the 60's tomorrow afternoon, so with a little luck the color will be on it tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks Jerry,  the temps outside was about 60, I had the heater up high since last night 75, but it didn't take long for the hull to cool off when I cracked the door and turn on the exhaust fan, was 63 when I got done shooting, I used fast reducer, and a little more hardner, but it was still slow setting up, got a couple little runs down under the chines, well, I quess above the chines, won't take much to clean them up in a few days when it cures.

Barb, we still got plenty of shooting to do, you'll get another hands on pretty soon.
