Back at it C-500 Rehab
« on: February 05, 2014, 02:38:35 PM »

Hello CGOAMN Pals,
Well I started again on the C-500 the first of January. Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Hull is looking good, wet sanded with 800-1000-1500-3000 then medium compound then finesse it II then 2 coats of sealer and a coat of wax. It turned out aqua but I am happy with it and it was never going to be blue again anyway. Built the new rear seat frame and took that and the old stuff to the upholsterer, ordered aqua color material. Ed at EDS Plastics is making the new windshield and the carpet came in today. Got the wiring and gauges striped out and got most of the electrical stuff gathered up to re wire the whole thing. It's fun to be putting stuff back together instead of tearing things out. You guys have been a great help. The black plastic dash assembly has a couple screw holes in the top where someone mounted something. Anybody been successful at patching that stuff? Putting some pix on here, hope it works, I have issues with pix sometimes. Also got a pix of the new addition picked up last fall. '79 CVX-16 orange and yellow.
Thanks
Crebb

The finish looks great, did you paint it or are you restoring the original gelcoat?

It should be very close to if not the same as a CVX16 hull.
So "yes" it has a pad ...

Cool boat !

We're having fun now man! Carpet is in, wiring nearly done, polished up the aluminum belt and put in back on. But, there is always a surprise to make it interesting. I put one side of the rub rail back in with a dulled off chisel and rubber mallet. Worked pretty good but slow. WhenI got to the back it was about 8" short! I thought it would be too long 'cause when I pulled it out it came out hard and was stretching. I read the string about installing rub rail but not clear if everyone was using the old or buying new. Hate to buy new as mine is in great shape. You think if I heated it like the bucket of hot water idea it would stretch longer?

I would put it in a bucket of hot water, then as you put it in the aluminum channel start at the front and pull towards the back as you are putting it in.  I used after market stuff from taco metals  and would just push it in with a screw driver on the under side. Good luck.

I cleaned and coated my old one with Buckeye 2002 (303 Aerospace Protectant ) and pulled it down after getting most of it installed.
It stretches quite a bit ... The Buckeye made it slippery ...

I installed the stuff Jeff had on my 18 at the Red Wing meet last year and I just heated up some water threw it in for a  few minutes. Started at the front and went back pulling it out of the water as I went. It worked great and I put it in with my bare hands. Prob took 5-10 min to install. It took longer to heat up the kettle of water.
I think this has become an addiction.

Got no hot water at the shop but I came up with this and it worked perfectly. (see pix) Bow and stern rail caps polished up and installed. EDS Plastics called yesterday and the new windshield is done. Upholsterer is starting on my seats this week. Almost changed the color I had picked out for the seats but then I brought a sample home and laid it on the boat, its a dead match to the new "blended" color that was blue and is now aqua. Going to finish up wiring and the control rigging. It will be time to  move the boat to the trailer and set the engine soon. Looking in the motor mount bolt holes I see some hollow in the transom between the inside of the splashwell and the new transom. Need to inject some resin in there probably with some chopped up glass in it. Any ideas how to get it in there? Turkey baster?
