Swallows
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:48:24 PM »
So every year a pair of Swallows will make a nest under my boat lift; this year is as normal.  If you look at the picture one Swallow is perched on my "refrigerator" of a motor, while the other is on a nest in the far upper corner beam.  I don't mind.  When I go near the boat they will squawk at me and dive at me a bit but we kind of tolerate each other.  At the beginning of the season as they build their nest I will sit with them for a time and have a discussion about not pooping on my boat.  It is actually a pretty lively discussion at times. :)  As I move closer to the nest to make my point known they squawk at me, and admittedly, I squawk back advising them on my pooping requirement.  A good debate no doubt; but I definitely don't win all the time.

About five eggs?? The flying insects near my dock are about to meet their match!

Love the lake in the background...can't wait to get up to Park Rapids for the 4th!

On the bird topic...I have a pair of Cardinals that return every year to a tree nearby.  They will sit outside on a table or find me when I'm in the yard when the bird feeder is empty and chirp at me until I fill it.

They will disappear though when the local Barred Owl is around...also a beautiful bird.

Have you been able to do any hand feeding or anything?  Or if you're in the boat, are they long gone...

No, I don't try to hand feed them.  Swallows are not those kind of birds, pretty skittish.  And I purposely give the adults and the chicks plenty of space.  I don't dawdle under the boat lift moving the boat in and out either, especially once the chicks are born; but we do start our "conversation" at that point.  :)

That is quite a nest.  My pops uses a great solution. Under his lift he has a couple of those fake toy snakes. He has a few hanging as well as one on the boat. The birds find other places to nest out of sheer terror of being eaten... either way it works.  My grandpa used to have the classic owl on a pole, that worked to the best of my knowledge.

Still I would wait till they hatch, knock down that nest and then do the scare tactic.  moving may cause separation and the parents wont attend to them.  You could also give the eggs to the other local wildlife or in the event you have no breakfast supplies....  :o

Doug, You're a sick puppy! The only thing that goes good with grits are eggs.

That's what I meant. Some Manatee bacon with grits and scrambled Swallow eggs.
